Going Back to School

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

So, I’m pretty excited actually. I’m going to be an NMSU student again starting this fall.

It feels like it’s been forever since I was in school (it’s been about a year), and I can’t wait to get back to studying. I don’t mean everything though, but I am taking some interesting classes this semester.

  • Biology 111
  • Psychology 201
  • Philosophy (Ethics) 223
  • Geology Geography 111

I pretty much will enjoy studying all of them, I’m pretty interested in them all. I decided, finally, on a major- well, temporarily still. Psychology seems to be the best fit. I could go to another college and probably find a more specific major for what I want to do (which I’m not even entirely sure I know what that is), but I love it here at NMSU, and Psychology has to do with a lot of what I’m interested in.

He was nice, my advisor, I told him my life story - he told me I should get into Psychology and maybe education when I get my degree. I love how people decided to do one thing over another, but I’m not sure if I am the ‘answer’ type of guy, all too often I’m handing out answers no one wants to hear; I’m not sure I will end up helping people.

But… it seems to fit for now, and I’m excited anyways to study. I love to learn, and my classes all sound pretty awesome, and I’m thankful I don’t have any I hate.

Work

I will still be working on the Cobweb Project at the College of Business, here at NMSU. But, obviously, super-part-time. But, I don’t see school really getting in the way, but I do see myself having a busy semester!

By the way, click that link up there and you can see what we are doing and working on…

Oh! I also finally get to create an education category!

Summertime

Summertime at NMSU

The campus was pretty stale today after work.

So, I know it’s summer when the campus starts acting a lot less lively. I’ve been here four years, and each summer the campus goes through this, I miss it being all crazy, all the time.

Although me and my friends boredom, outside of work, has got us hanging out again, which is a nice change.

Coding Away

I swear I'm not always goofing off, usually pasted to the screen.

Goofing off, the only way to code. That’s Renee, in the back, with all her paper :)

I think I mentioned before about how much time I’d be spending working on the Cobweb project. Already I’ve been spending 6-8 hour days working on it.

We had a meeting this morning with the lady in charge of working with the College Executive Committee, and already they’re excited to see what’s coming out of me and Renee’s office.

We have a lot of work to do this summer, the site is going to be an intense platform/application; meeting the most up-to-date standards, working well with the rest of the university, mingling well with content management systems and publishing software. It’s hard to think such a massive piece of work will be coming out of my little lappie (laptop).

Me, mighty mouse and my trusty lappie at work.

I’m trying to develop the site to be as much self managing as possible, letting anyone publish content at will, while the website does all the nasty work in the background. And, I don’t think they quite get how complex everything is, and so they’re rushing our already ‘pushing it’ December deadline.

But, as always, I plan to stand my ground and focus on quality work.

Tennis

Soo and James at the Tennis Center

Soo and James at the Tennis Center on another windy day. May 12th 2008

I haven’t been spending a lot of time at the NMSU Tennis Center since my arm getting better, it’s been windy day after day. My arm was at about 70%, this morning hitting with Jason, preparing for a match tomorrow.

Although he almost got past me today, me winning 7-5, I was crippled :)

I also haven’t been off to a good start on my goals for the summer, especially the one where I’m going to work out like a beast and get in shape for some tournaments. But, I’m working on that; if they would just quit bringing cake to the office, you know I have to have at least two slices!

Home Life & Travel

Aubrey Island, Walking to Work

Walking along the bike trail. Travis, Las Cruces, NM

Oh, and I’ve also been walking everywhere since my bike was stolen.

So, I’ve been getting in a little extra excersize for all the wretched snacking going on at my casa.

So, I thought I’d throw a summer update out there. Actually I was bored, but it just proves my point!

Update: Dude, Where’s My Car (Bike)?

In response to: Dude, Where’s My Car (Bike)?

So, it’s official, my bike had to have been stolen. I have looked, and asked around, just about everywhere, and it’s nowhere to be found. I am actually about to call it in right now.

Bleh, Police…

Update: Dude, Where’s My Car (Bike)?
May 2nd, 2008

So last night, at about one o’clock I walked out to the lot behind the Howdy’s gas station on University and Locust, where I always park my motorcycle, and I couldn’t find it!

I swear this bike is always getting itself into trouble. The last couple of weeks it had been hit, and knocked over twice in the same lot, and once at NMSU, by people who don’t know how to park.

I talked to NMSU, they don’t have it. I talked to the bank, they don’t have it. Right now I am trying my best to find out who owns the lot, because I could only imagine that it was either stolen (far fetched right now), or it was towed by the owner.

I left it overnight, it had been running weird from being hit before, I think, so I left it there until I could figure out what to do with it the next day. It was there a night, I’ve had it there night(s) before, many nights, and it never left the lot, so it’s odd to think it was towed by the owner.

The gas station says they have never heard of anyones car or anything being towed before, so I am starting to get a little bit worried. I even looked around the parking lots close to the station, hoping it was just some assholes idea of a bad joke.

So, for now, I don’t know where it is. I’ll post updates though.

Double Up!

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Today I completely doubled my usual fitness routine! It was crazy, but it’s something I’ve been meaning to do for awhile. It’s pretty hard to do all the extra work on my own, the rest of the guys just go home - and I got about three more hours of work ahead of me.

But it felt nice, a good start to what I would like to see my summer become. Working really hard, hopefully pulling out some good results from it.

Here’s a look at some of the work I did today (after 3 hours on court):

  • 3 hours on court; cross court forehands/backhands, cross court/up the line transition drill, and volleys.
  • 60 sprints; sprint post to farthest corner, walk to post, with rests at 30.
  • 10 sets of lunges; from baseline to net and back, with rests at 5.
  • 10 sets of skips (each leg); from baseline to net and back (backwards), with rests at 5.
  • 19 laps at half-sprint pace around court, with 1 walking lap at 11.
  • 60 leg blasts (each leg); with weight, rests at 20.
  • 60 leg blasts (switching/each leg); with weight, rests at 20.
  • 80 open-stance blasts, with weight, rests at 20.
  • 40 blasts/lunges; with weight, rests at 10.
  • 20 minutes core; two minutes each (10), with a rest at 10 minutes. (I hate these!)
  • Plus more, got to keep some things secret…

Doing this three times a week is really going to impact how tired I am, I’m pretty noodly right now. I will defiantly feel this tomorrow, hopefully I can play. At Grunt, I felt exactly like this!

Miserable! :)

I’m not even sure if this is a lot, I just know for me it’s a lot, I do about half that usually. On the other two days I will most likely double the work I do on the court, I hope my friends are up for it, and recover. Or, maybe I’ll separate court workouts and gym workouts (weight), don’t know which sounds more appetizing yet :).

I really pushed myself to do what I did today, it was tough by myself, because it’s so easy to just give up early, not do those last five lunges. There’s no one to yell at you about it, or tell you it’s worth it, or anything. It takes crazy discipline to go out there on your own, and that’s harder than the work itself!

To be honest, I have been slacking lately; doing half! Every loss at practice, every shanked shot because I didn’t get there - they kept me going today! No more excuses!

So, I hope I can keep it up.

Hopefully, I can get some pictures and videos up. Compared to how I hit a few months ago, I hope it looks different - it should!
