Summertime

Summertime at NMSU

The campus was pretty stale today after work.

So, I know it’s summer when the campus starts acting a lot less lively. I’ve been here four years, and each summer the campus goes through this, I miss it being all crazy, all the time.

Although me and my friends boredom, outside of work, has got us hanging out again, which is a nice change.

Coding Away

I swear I'm not always goofing off, usually pasted to the screen.

Goofing off, the only way to code. That’s Renee, in the back, with all her paper :)

I think I mentioned before about how much time I’d be spending working on the Cobweb project. Already I’ve been spending 6-8 hour days working on it.

We had a meeting this morning with the lady in charge of working with the College Executive Committee, and already they’re excited to see what’s coming out of me and Renee’s office.

We have a lot of work to do this summer, the site is going to be an intense platform/application; meeting the most up-to-date standards, working well with the rest of the university, mingling well with content management systems and publishing software. It’s hard to think such a massive piece of work will be coming out of my little lappie (laptop).

Me, mighty mouse and my trusty lappie at work.

I’m trying to develop the site to be as much self managing as possible, letting anyone publish content at will, while the website does all the nasty work in the background. And, I don’t think they quite get how complex everything is, and so they’re rushing our already ‘pushing it’ December deadline.

But, as always, I plan to stand my ground and focus on quality work.

Tennis

Soo and James at the Tennis Center on another windy day. May 12th 2008

I haven’t been spending a lot of time at the NMSU Tennis Center since my arm getting better, it’s been windy day after day. My arm was at about 70%, this morning hitting with Jason, preparing for a match tomorrow.

Although he almost got past me today, me winning 7-5, I was crippled :)

I also haven’t been off to a good start on my goals for the summer, especially the one where I’m going to work out like a beast and get in shape for some tournaments. But, I’m working on that; if they would just quit bringing cake to the office, you know I have to have at least two slices!

Home Life & Travel

Aubrey Island, Walking to Work

Walking along the bike trail. Travis, Las Cruces, NM

Oh, and I’ve also been walking everywhere since my bike was stolen.

So, I’ve been getting in a little extra excersize for all the wretched snacking going on at my casa.

So, I thought I’d throw a summer update out there. Actually I was bored, but it just proves my point!

Hagerman, Living In A Small Town

Kenney Chesney - In a Small Town (mp3)
A must listen, while you read…

This morning, while cleaning, I had a sudden urge to listen to some country.

A lot of people are surprised to know I even listen to country music, and that it’s in my blood. I have been feeling a little home sick the last few days of spring break, and I wished I had planned a trip to Hagerman, New Mexico.

Grandpa’s Farm

Although I grew up quite the opposite of ‘country’ with computers and all, I spent enough time at my grandpa’s farm to stain ‘country’ in my blood.

Old memories of the plane hanger, dried up reservoirs, pecan trees, four-wheelers, playing outside, the long path to the hanger that was always cool from alfalfa fields, and imitating my grandpa on Sunday mornings.

That Infamous Hagerman Water Tower

He’d wake up every Sunday and go outside, just to take the shirt off his old back and feel the sun on it. I didn’t know what he was doing, I simply was out there imitating, just for the sake of it; like I was doing something cool too.

Kenny Chesney’s, In A Small Town

The song that struck me to write this…

Ever since I started listening to Kenny Chesney’s music, I’ve always admired him keeping small town country with him. I remembered immediately thinking, oops, I could’ve done that too.

It’s interesting how I’ve been a fan of board shorts, flip flops, country music, and writing songs, and I love the beach. But, you’ll never get me in one of those hats!

Not Quite Country

Mom
My Crazy Mom

But I’ve never claimed to be country though.

I remember how separated from the rest of our family I felt growing up. I remember watching Destry do all the work, while me and my brother played.

I wasn’t ever allowed to go do work on the farm, and I never understood why. Plus my mom was always encouraging me to read and use the computer, but I always wanted my uncles to let me go out to the farm and work.

I wanted to ride the four-wheeler on my own, but I guess my mom had different plans for us…

B.T.W, I think this is the whole reason I bought a motorcycle!

Running Away from Home

Me and Robin
I spent a large portion of my time trying to embarrass my brother, I believe his girlfriend took the picture.

Me and my brother, Robin, ran away from Hagerman like you’ve never seen anyone run before! I remember how we would talk about never missing it, and never coming back.

Over the phone, we admitted the other day, the older we get, the more we miss it. I guess that small town really wasn’t that bad.

I think it’s up to the type of people you put in it.

Going Back Home

Home
Home

I guess I get a little too caught up in what I’m doing out here.

I always skip spring break and the holidays, and at the last minute wish I had got the hell out of here!

I love going home because it all becomes so much simpler, all my mom worries about is how she’s going to get first place in the county fair.

All I worry about is where I’m going to take the next nap! Plus there’s always something to do in a small town, people to visit and catch up with.

Plus, I totally love visiting the old L&A Cafe, so Ms. Nievez can say, “Ugly, you back for good!?”

Some Other Random Thoughts

The Pecos River, walking everywhere, riding my bike all around town, Ms. Amen, that old Baptist church, Ms. Dennis, Sunday School, Jesse, Living in the Garage (haha), pet rats, bunk beds, taping the radio, basic television, Popsicles, power rangers, Betitio, Thomas, skating in the parade, Old Timers Day, Hobbs (our dog), that old ugly Subaru (our car), Hagerman Elementary, 4H, Irrigation Ditches…
